Bula, (note from client who recently visited
Fiji)
Pretty
simple, not even an event. two perspectives
Mine
- We saw one soldier on the way to the airport
and considering he was about 150 lb overweight
and had a huge grin on his face as we buzzed
past him, seemed more like a green Santa Claus
than anything else. The businesses were openm, traffic
flowed, and everything was just normal
Locals-
In a way they seemed amused that we were even
asking them about it. To them it was a more
of a political issue that happens every once
in a while and nothing much ever comes from
it. At the same time they understood that the
global media played it up and that could hurt
travel and business.
If
I hadn't watched the news before I got there
I wouldn't have know anything out of the normal
was going on.
It
was a great time,
Thanks,
Lamar

UPDATE FROM MARAVU PLANTATION BEACH RESORT &
SPA
Taveuni,
Fiji – 14 December 2006
Following is a personal update from Jochen Kiess,
resident of Suva, and owner of Maravu Plantation
Beach Resort & Spa.
A
military takeover of Fiji’s government
occurred last Tuesday, 5 December. Despite the
unfortunate circumstance, this governmental
takeover was both calm and smooth. Several countries
have responded to this political unrest by placing
all of Fiji on a travel advisory. It is obvious
that the reasons behind these country’s
advisories is the safety and comfort of their
citizens. However, these warnings rarely, if
ever, contain the whole story of what is going
on in Fiji.
Earlier this week, I was fortunate to have a
personal meeting with Colonel Pita Driti, the
Land Force Commander of the Republic of Fiji
Military Forces. The reason for our meeting
was to discuss the travel warnings issued by
some countries, and also some travel advisories
and warnings on certain international travel
websites.
Colonel Pita Driti gave me his personal assurance
that under no circumstance would any visitor
to Fiji be harmed in any way. One of the most
important issues for the RFMF is the security
of Fiji's citizens, visitors and investors.
This assurance was in line with several statements
made by Fiji’s Military Commander Commodore
Voreque Bainimarama. At a press conference on
Wednesday, Mr. Bainimarama assured absolute
safety for foreign investments.
The current security situation in Fiji is stable
and safe. I live with my family in Suva, and
have traveled around the city every single day.
There is not the slightest sign of unrest or
tension. People in Suva are going about their
normal daily lives: visiting the market, spending
time with friends and family, freely traveling
into and out of the city. I personally feel
very safe in Suva, and am in no way hindered
in my daily business. The political unrest in
Fiji was between the previous government and
the military, and it is not between, nor involving
the ordinary Fijian citizens, nor in any way
expatriates, visitors or investors.
It is also important to stress that not one
single shot was fired, nor any act of violence
took place during the transition of governance.
There is also no sign of any resistance, and
the only call in regards of that came from the
Australian Foreign Affairs Minister, who pleaded
for "passive resistance" through the
citizens of Fiji. Fiji's traditional leadership,
the Great Council of Chiefs, is obviously more
wise and versed in Fijian history and politics,
since no such call was made from them, nor from
any other leading citizens of Fiji.
Very soon an interim government will be set
in place, and we certainly hope that the clearly
exaggerated travel warnings will be recalled
in due course.
Maravu
Plantation Beach Resort & Spa is located
on Fiji’s Garden Island of Taveuni, which
is located 90 minutes by flight from Nadi, and
60 minutes from Suva. Maravu continues its normal
operations, with guest arrivals, special events,
weddings, daily activities, excursions and more.
Several guests at Maravu have commented that,
had they not been personally told by resort
staff, they would never had known there was
any unrest in Fiji.

Bula
from Maravu!
"This morning I went on a nice long jog
with Maravus Dog Blaizy who loves to accompany
me down the west coast road, overlooking the
ocean to the right and soaking in the green
from the tropical vegetation on my left. The
amount of good oxygen that fills my lungs must
be amazing and it always clears my head and
gets the Endorphins "Happy Hormones"
flowing. I trained Blaizy NOT to chase cars
any more and she was so good just running right
next to me most of the time. On our way back
the clouds became bigger and then all of a sudden
this big, tropical rain just happened right
over us. Because the weather is so warm right
now and even the rain is warm it was actually
great fun. So we both had a rainbath and now
I understand why the Fijian kids on the island
always love to run around in the rain and play."
